Domestic & General required a complete notebook refresh across nearly 2,000 users spanning five European countries. The project faced several critical considerations that threatened both the timeline and budget.
Having traditionally used Intel®-powered machines, they discovered that Intel’s latest generation would only support Windows 10 operating systems. This presented major application compatibility issues, with nearly 20% of users heavily reliant on mission-critical applications for accounts and complaints that were only compatible with earlier Windows editions.
As Chris Jones, Desktop Services Manager at Domestic & General, explained: “We needed a solution that would deliver predictable performance and breakthrough commercial value without disrupting key applications or forcing immediate application upgrades.”
Additionally, their legacy Intel estate was experiencing nagging firmware issues, resulting in higher-than-normal failure rates – something that needed to be avoided in the new technology choices.
Drawing on our established vendor relationships and deep technical expertise, we became Domestic & General’s trusted technology partner for this complex multi-country deployment.
We quickly identified that AMD-based machines could help Domestic & General realise significant economic savings while achieving the same, if not greater, performance versus Intel-equivalent devices. Critically, AMD would enable continued access to their critical applications thanks to wider support for legacy Windows operating systems.
Loyal to the reliable, user-friendly experience they had enjoyed with HP’s first-class range of notebooks, we recommended continuing with HP products but with AMD processors – delivering the perfect balance of familiarity and innovation.
Our pre-sales team’s deep product knowledge proved invaluable throughout the project. We shared technology roadmaps surrounding HP and AMD technology, benchmarked performance data, and introduced demo machines to select user groups. Testing by both standard and high-power users confirmed that AMD’s Accelerated Processing Units delivered welcomed performance improvements.
To overcome supply constraints that were causing unacceptable wait times for new starters, we arranged to hold buffer stock, enabling machines to be called off on demand. We also ensured seamless logistics across all five European sites, with every shipped device being country-specific, localised and ready for deployment.
The refresh has been a resounding success. Switching to AMD-based notebooks delivered comparable performance versus Intel across the board, but with noticeably reduced failure rates and zero impact on the IT team. Most impressively, this was achieved at a cost saving of 25% on similarly configured Intel machines.
Critically, users continue to access all key applications they need, whenever and wherever they want, due to AMD’s compatibility with legacy Windows operating systems. They no longer face the limitations of Windows 10-only devices or pressure for immediate application upgrades.
